Sunshine, mulching, planting and landscape architect Richard Ashcroft
A marvelous sunny day saw the outside team getting stuck into moving the mulch with great gusto. Some were planting in the food forest, some planting the natives donated to us by Akura Nursery Masterton and some mulching the new plants with cardboard and bark chips to suppress the grass and prevent evaporation of the soil around the new plants.
Inside team were working with the landscape architect Richard Ashcroft, Richard came in to talk to the students about all their ideas for the school farm. Richard will turn all of our ideas and plans into three options for what to do with the school field. He will return in two weeks with some plans for the students to look at and take elements from to create a final design option.
Richard has been working on a new adventure playground at Blue School and The Pod in Greytown, we visited the new playground to gain inspiration for the nature play areas planned in our farm design.
At blue school there is a sensory path using different natural materials and cement.
Richard used some enormous logs at The Pod for a natural climbing frame and you can see the flying fox in the background.
The playgrounds use a lot of natural and recycled elements and planting as well as topography to create a rich nature playscape.
We really liked Richards work and were excited when he wanted to come on board with our project to help us map out our design. We look forward to seeing what he comes up with from the students plans and mood boards.
