Yotam Kay our friend and partner from Pakaraka Permaculture teaches Wairarapa gardeners about market gardening techniques for the home garden

Join us in August and September 2022 for our community gardening workshops!

All workshops are $30 per person and last for approx 2 hours and include hands-on experience, expert advice and afternoon tea.

14th August: Winter Pruning: 2-4pm

Come and learn all about effective fruit tree pruning for apple and pear trees. We will learn the techniques for shaping and selecting the right branches to prune. There will be an opportunity to practice on some willow branches before working together to prune some trees in our food forest using the correct techniques.

21st August: Food Forest Tour (Koha) 2-4pm 

Join our founder Emilie as she takes you through our food forest garden explaining the process of setting it up and how it has grown and changed. She will explain the concepts of a food forest garden and give you lots of tips and tricks for growing one effectively. (Bookings not necessary)

28th August: Fruit tree guild 2-4pm 

Got fruit trees or wanting to plant some? Give them a proper start by planting them as part of a guild. Learn what kinds of plants to plant around fruit trees and see some established guilds in action before having a go at planting a fruit tree guild.

4th September: Apple tree Grafting 2-4pm

Learn how to graft a scion onto rootstock effectively. Experts will take you through the process step by step for a successful graft. Grafted trees will be available to purchase either for yourself or to donate to our Fruit Trees in Schools programme.

11th September: Hot Composting 2-4pm

Making your own compost is a core part of permaculture gardening and while conventional composting is great for the long-term, getting steamy with some hot compost is a great way to quickly produce a nutritious growing medium and also kill of some difficult things such as seeds, weeds and diseases. Come and join this practical workshop to learn about how to create and maintain a hot compost.

18th September: Propagating 2-4pm  

Learn how to grow a variety of beneficial plants from roots and cuttings. Plants will be available to take home for a koha or can be donated back to Te Kura o Papatūānuku for our plant sales.
