Call to Action - capturing student voices for Conservation Week 4-12 September 2021

Take a moment to celebrate and nurture nature this Conservation Week.

When Papatūānuku thrives, we all thrive. This can be felt when we take time for ourselves in the outdoors - we give our minds a break and feel connected to nature. It can be as simple as stopping to listen to birdsong or taking a walk with the whānau. You could even plant a native tree in your backyard or join a community event.  (DOC website)

Let’s spend August working on creating artworks, poetry, drawings, paintings, infographics, stories, one minute videos and celebrating student voices. This work will be displayed and celebrated during Conservation Week at three main regional events Carterton events centre, ConArt in Masterton and the Waihinga centre in Martinborough, displays will also be in all the Wairarapa Librairies and student voices will be showcased on the MORE FM breakfast show with Brent Gare.

Conservation is about preserving and protecting natural environment, native wildlife and their habitats including marine reserves

Session Breakdown:

  • Introduction session on the concepts of conservation, regeneration and restoration.

  • Reflection session linking the wider concepts with the experiences of the students with conservation in Aotearoa, student action and representing student voice in creative ways.

Share your story how you connect with nature

or nurture nature

Akonga create their own 1 minute fims using imovie that share their stories. They can show and tell us what they do - why they do it - what concerns them - what they imagine a better future looks like. If you want to create a poster instead of a video or a sound clip … let your creativity flow

Use these videos in Conservation Week in your own school and wider community to celebrate their nurturing and connecting with nature to inspire us all - young and old.

Upload videos to your own sharing platforms and share the link with us by 18th August.

From these videos we will gather quotes from akonga to share with the wider Wairarapa community via live radio and sound bytes. We may share at the events and in libraries after gathering permissions from akonga whānau.

Any questions or support for akonga please email gill.enviroschools@gmail.com
